A root canal has a bigger reputation than it deserves. The treatment exists to relieve pain, not cause it: it removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth so you can keep the tooth instead of losing it. If you need a root canal in Folsom, Dr. Nasr can often diagnose the problem, treat the tooth, and place a finished crown in a single visit.
Signs you might need a root canal
Inside every tooth is the pulp, the nerves and blood vessels that run through narrow canals down the roots. When deep decay, a crack, or repeated dental work lets bacteria reach the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected. Common signs include:
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the food or drink is gone
- A throbbing toothache, or one that wakes you up at night
- Pain when you bite down or press on the tooth
- Swollen, tender gums near the tooth, or a pimple-like bump on the gum
- A tooth that has darkened in color
Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and the problem shows up on a routine X-ray. Antibiotics may calm an infection for a while, but they can't clean out the inside of a tooth, so symptoms usually return without treatment.
Swelling in your face or jaw needs prompt attention: call us right away, and see our emergency dentistry page. If swelling affects your breathing or swallowing, go to an emergency room.
What happens during a root canal, step by step
- 1Diagnosis. Digital X-rays and simple tests confirm which tooth is the source of the problem and whether it can be saved.
- 2Numbing. The tooth and surrounding area are thoroughly numbed before anything begins.
- 3Opening the tooth. The tooth is isolated to keep it clean and dry, and a small opening is made in the top to reach the pulp.
- 4Cleaning and shaping. Using rotary endodontic instruments, flexible motor-driven files, Dr. Nasr removes the infected pulp, then cleans, shapes, and disinfects each canal.
- 5Filling and sealing. The canals are filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha and sealed to keep bacteria out.
- 6Rebuilding and protecting. The tooth is rebuilt, and most back teeth then get a crown, often in the same appointment.
Step by step
What happens during a root canal
1Infected pulp
Bacteria reach the nerve and blood supply inside the tooth, causing pain or infection at the root tip.
2Cleaned and shaped
Through a small opening, the infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned with rotary instruments.
3Filled and sealed
The canals are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed so bacteria can't get back in.
4Protected with a crown
A back tooth usually gets a crown — at Creekside, often a same-day CEREC crown.
Does a root canal hurt?
Most of the pain comes from the infection before treatment, not from the procedure. The American Association of Endodontists notes that with modern techniques and anesthesia, most patients report being comfortable during a root canal.
If you're nervous, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available, and Dr. Nasr can prescribe medication to help you relax before your visit. If you take it, you'll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. Tell the front desk you're anxious; it changes how we schedule you, with more time and no waiting-room limbo.
Afterward, the tooth may feel tender for a few days, and over-the-counter pain relievers are usually enough. Avoid chewing hard on it until it's fully restored.
Why you may need a crown after a root canal
A tooth that needs a root canal has usually already lost structure to decay, cracks, or large fillings. Back teeth take heavy chewing forces and are prone to breaking afterward, so most treated molars and premolars need a crown. Front teeth can often be restored with a filling instead.
At Creekside, that crown can usually be made the same day. Same-day crowns are designed and milled in our office with CEREC, so many patients have their exam, root canal, and finished crown in one appointment, with no temporary and no second round of numbing.
What does a root canal in Folsom cost?
The fee depends mostly on the tooth and how involved the treatment is:
- Which tooth. Front teeth usually have a single canal. Molars typically have three or more, which takes more time.
- Complexity. Narrow, curved, or calcified canals take longer to treat.
- The restoration. A build-up and crown afterward are separate from the root canal itself.
- Your insurance. Many dental plans cover part of a root canal and the crown that follows.
Saving your tooth with a root canal and crown often costs less than removing it and replacing it with an implant or bridge. Creekside accepts most PPO insurance, our front desk checks your benefits before treatment, and in-house monthly payment plans are available.
Root canal vs. extraction and an implant
The alternative to a root canal is removing the tooth. Extraction is quicker on the day, but a missing tooth should usually be replaced with a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial denture to keep neighboring teeth from drifting and your bite from changing.
When a tooth can be saved and has a good long-term outlook, keeping your natural tooth is generally the first choice. When it's cracked below the gumline or too damaged to rebuild, an implant may be the better answer. Dr. Nasr places and restores implants himself, so he can talk you through both paths honestly.
Root canal in Folsom: when we refer to a specialist
Dr. Nasr treats many root canals in our office. Some cases are better handled by an endodontist, a specialist with additional training in root canal treatment.
Examples include teeth with severely curved or calcified canals, unusual anatomy, some retreatments of an old root canal, and cases that need a surgical approach. If that's your situation, we'll explain why and coordinate the referral, and your crown can still be done here afterward.
